According to the Chronicler, this verse tells us that the men from the family of Levi were chosen to help in God's house when they turned twenty years old. They were counted to make sure there were enough helpers for the important work.

1 Chronicles 23:24: These [were] the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; [even] the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward.

Contradiction with Numbers 4:3

This verse states that Levites were to serve from 30 to 50 years of age, whereas 1 Chronicles 23:24 sets the starting age at 20.
