Contradiction with Deuteronomy 20:16-17
Deuteronomy 2:5 tells the Israelites not to contend with Esau's descendants for their land, whereas Deuteronomy 20:16-17 describes God commanding the Israelites to utterly destroy cities in the land He has given them.
Deuteronomy 20:16-17: But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee [for] an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
Contradiction with Joshua 6:21
Deuteronomy 2:5 instructs the Israelites not to take land from the Edomites, yet in Joshua 6:21, they destroy all living things in Jericho contrary to the peaceful instruction in Deuteronomy 2:5.
Joshua 6:21: And they utterly destroyed all that [was] in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
Contradiction with 1 Samuel 15:3
Discrepancy exists as Deuteronomy 2:5 advises against harming Edomites and tells not to engage in battles with them, whereas 1 Samuel 15:3 describes God instructing Saul to attack the Amalekites and utterly destroy them.
1 Samuel 15:3: Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
Paradox #1
Deuteronomy 2:5 could be seen as inconsistent because it involves God instructing the Israelites not to disturb the people of Esau or take their land. However, elsewhere in the Bible, God commands the Israelites to conquer and take the land from other groups. This raises questions about why certain peoples are protected while others are not.
