According to Moses, the man who wrote this book, after the king of Egypt died, the people of Israel were very sad and upset because they were being forced to work very hard. They cried out to God for help, and God heard them.

Exodus 2:23: And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

Contradiction with Exodus 2:24

It states that God remembers His covenant and hears the groaning of Israelites, however, Exodus 2:23 suggests their cries weren't acknowledged for a long time.
