According to Moses, who is believed to have written Genesis, Jacob and Esau had so many animals and things that the land couldn't support both of them living there together. So, they had to live in different places because there wasn't enough room for all their stuff.
Genesis 36:7: For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.
Genesis 13:6 describes how the land could not support both Abram and Lot's herds, which led them to separate, similar to Genesis 36:7, but it contradicts in the implication of peaceful separation without discord.
Genesis 13:6: And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
