According to Jeremiah, when people pick grapes in a vineyard, they usually leave a few grapes behind, and even nighttime thieves won't take everything because they only take what they need. This means that even when bad things happen, not everything is lost, and there is some hope left.
Jeremiah 49:9: If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave [some] gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough. [till...: Heb. their sufficiency]
While Jeremiah 49:9 suggests that grape gatherers leave some grapes, Obadiah 1:5 states that thieves would leave nothing till they have destroyed.
Obadiah 1:5: If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave [some] grapes? [some...: or, gleanings?]
