According to John, this part of the story happens in a place called Bethabara, by the Jordan River, where John the Baptist was helping people show they wanted to follow God by baptizing them in the water. Christians often see this as an important place because it's where John prepared people’s hearts for Jesus.
John 1:28: These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
John 3:23 states that John was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, which is a different location than Bethabara where John 1:28 says he was baptizing.
John 3:23: And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
